The Perfect Diamond

What once started out as two brothers-in-law, expert cutters and polishers, buying and selling fine jewellery, became AMC Diamonds, a three-generation business formed in 1988. In 1994, a short span of six years after AMC was formed, it became Sightholders at DTC-De Beers, London.

AMC Diamonds merged with Diamond & Gem Corp in July 2001, and solidified their position as the definitive source for certified diamonds in larger sizes.

Today, AMC Diamonds is also a Sightholder in South Africa, with polishing plants in Belgium, China and South Africa. With its headquarters located at Antwerp Diamond Bourse in Antwerp, Belgium and offices around the world, AMC is a company that operates globally by the highest environmental, social and quality standards.

The perfect Cut

In 1919, Marcel Tolkowsky, a Belgian diamond cutter, calculated the optimum diamond proportions to obtain the “Ideal Cut”. An ideal cut diamond allows light to reflect internally, and reflected back only through the top, creating optimum fire, brilliance and scintillation.

At their state-of-the-art facilities, AMC’s Belgian Master Cutters take the “Ideal Cut” to the next level by bringing a Destinée diamond to its brilliant existence. The master cutters take 5 times longer to cut a Destinée than an average round brilliant diamond, to achieve perfection in proportions, symmetry and polish.

DestinГ©e diamonds are rated "AGS Triple Zero" for its cut (the highest possible rating), by the American Gem Society (AGS) Laboratories. The Triple Zero Cuts rating is only attained when the diamond is graded "Zero" for three important features: the perfection in proportions, symmetry and polish.

Of the four "C"s, the cut of a diamond is most crucial to its brillance.

The Belgian diamond cutter, Marcel Tolkowsky (1899-1991), mathematically calculated the optimum diamond proportions in 1919. Today, his formula is still considered by many diamond experts to constitute the "Ideal Cut".

An ideal cut diamond allows light entering the diamond to reflect internally from facet to facet. And the light is reflected back only through the top, creating the brillance and sparkle.

Minute impurities within the stone may cause yellow or brown tinting in most diamonds. Unseen by the naked eye, purity of colour will affect the diamond's value.

The colour of each diamond is determined by measuring it against "colour master" diamonds. Only diamonds rated colour AGS 1.5 (G) or better are selected to become DestinГ©e diamonds.

Almost all diamonds have "birthmarks" called inclusions. A perfectly flawless diamond is extremely rare, but with strict standards of selection, it is possible to achieve a high level of clarity.
